2010 Sydney Balboa WeekendIt’s balboa time and we are proud to announce the Sydney balboa Weekend with Nick and Laura,  we once again look forward to an amazing and inspiring weekend of the dance we love “Balboa”.

Friday Night – Welcome Dance
A fun and relaxed social dance to get you in the mood. Come down have a drink and catch up with your fellow Balboa dancers as you get to know the teachers. Great DJ’s will set the mood as we dance the night away and get ready for the weekend ahead.

Saturday Night – Balboa Ball

Let’s dress up and have some fun. This is the night to go all out in your finest vintage or vintage inspired clothing to get the full 30’s /40’s look. Come and see the teachers Jam and then everyone gets a chance to shine in the Balboa Jack and Jill comp. Once again great Dj’s will ensure that you’ll be on the dance floor all night long, we are also sourcing a live band (TBC) for your dancing pleasure.

The Workshops

We are will be offering a unique opportunity to enjoy two full days with two of the worlds most sort after Balboa teachers. The workshops will be progressive learning from saturday morning  starting with intermediate level through to more advanced material on Sunday afternoon. Please make sure that you choose the appropriate level for yourself, this way you will gain the most from the weekend. You will most definately need to be comfortable with your basics to get the most from this workshop.

Saturday – Intermediate
This is not a beginner class, you will need to be comfortable with your basics, lolly’s and throw outs as a minimum to get the most from this workshop. The teachers will be giving lots of tips hints and drills on how to improve your basics, leading and following as well as lots of new material to boost your repertoire on the dance floor. This will be the workshop that will take your Balboa to a new level.

Sunday – Intermediate/Advanced Sunday
OK so you have been dancing Balboa for a while now and you really know what you are doing, – up for a challenge? Then here is the class for you. An opportunity to learn with other advanced dancers and journey to a new level. Of course your still wanting tip and hints on your basic as well as anything else the teachers have to give!

Sunday Evening – Advanced/Masters
A special opportunity for the advanced balboa dancers, numbers will be strictly limited.  Anyone wishing to take this class will need to email: sharon@swingitmeaustralia You will also need to have taken at least one full day of workshop. Extra Cost for Masters class $30 if puchasing a full pass,  $50 if purchasing one day of workshop.

About the Teachers

Laura Keat (USA)
Laura Keat began her swing dance career in Denver when she joined the Championship Lindy Hop performance team, 23 Skidoo! She immediately took off with her dancing and started winning national titles after dancing for a relatively short time.

Laura has earned several National Championship titles such as American Lindy Hop “Classic” Champion, US Open “Strictly Lindy” Champion, Camp Jitterbug “Lindy Hop” Champion, both Northern California and Northwest Bal-Swing Championships and most recently the 2007 US Open “Fast Dance” Champion. Laura loves working with an array of leads to widen her following abilities and to be inspired by their diverse styles and ideas. Her classes emphasize the use of excellent connection and technique to enhance individual style, and maximize room for musicality and rhythmic dance. Laura’s passion for teaching compliments her passion for swing dancing itself, bringing an energy to her classes that is a unique benefit to her students

Nick Williams – California USA
Nick Williams has embodied the passion and spirit of swing dancing ever since his first lesson in 1998. His in depth understanding of Lindy Hop, Balboa, Charleston and Collegiate Shag stem from studying with the original dancers. Nick’s desire for authenticity, combined with his passion for dance evolution, leads to a style known for precision, lightness, and dynamic energy.

His successes include World Lindy Hop Champion, U.S. Open Swing Dance Champion, American Lindy Hop Champion, National Jitterbug Champion, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown Champion, American Classic Balboa Champion, and California Balboa/Swing Champion. He is also an accomplished choreographer and has been featured on the hit television show So You Think You Can Dance?

As an instructor, he is known for his ability to break down movements and technique to create a fun and light-hearted learning environment. His true love for music and dancing will forever inspire him to learn, teach, and grow. In 2004, Nick was honored to be recognized by the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame.
