The Teachers
Valerie Salstrom – Ohio USA
Valerie is currently working on achieving platinum status with Continental Airlines and looks like with all of her numerous teaching gigs; both nationally and internationally, she will soon reach her goal. In addition to her constant pursuit of first class upgrades, Valerie is also in pursuit of the perfect balboa basic and how to teach it. She is constantly studying the hows and whys of balboa, lindy, charleston, and more. Valerie is happy to be the eternal student of dance and even more happy to be in a position to share her dance discoveries with others. She has a reputation for her energy and enthusiasm; and sometimes crazy antics, both on and off the dance floor. Teaching, competing, performing, and judging swing dancing is a full time passion and profession for Valerie and she is very proud of her accomplishments.
In 2003 Valerie earned the title of Grand Slam Champion at the National Jitterbug Championships. In 2004 Valerie became the NJC Balboa Champion and the American Lindy Hop Champion in the American Showcase division. In 2006 Valerie became the NJC Champion in BOTH the Pro Balboa AND the Pro Lindy Division…and this helped her earn the title of Grand Slam Champion once again! Most recently Valerie was VERY happy to receive the title of International Balboa Champion at the 2008 Balboa Rendezvous. Valerie organizes and hosts the “All Balboa Weekend” in their home town of Cleveland, Ohio. This event is the grand daddy of all balboa events and was the first of its kind when it began in 2001.
The “All Balboa Weekend” is home to one of the largest and most prestigious balboa competitions, the “American Classic Balboa Championship” (AC/BC). Valerie is enthusiastic about passing on her love and passion for dance and brings a fresh, interesting, and lighthearted attitude to both the dance floor and the classroom.
